Planters made of stone or poured concrete look beautiful, no question. They are also weather-resistant and stable. However, these characteristics make them real heavyweights. A plant pot made of Styrofoam, on the other hand, is light. Making your own is just as easy. See for yourself with the instructions on this page.
How can I make a Styrofoam planter myself?
To make a planter out of Styrofoam yourself, cut the Styrofoam to the desired size, line the box with foil, press the corners tightly, cut off any excess foil, drill a drainage hole, fill in potting soil and place plants. Wooden slats can be glued on for design purposes.
Advantages of a Styrofoam planter
- extremely light in contrast to plant pots made of stone or concrete
- cost-effective material
- Any size selectable
- Children can also do crafts
Build your own Styrofoam planters
You recently received a package delivery? Perfect, instead of throwing away the useful craft material, use it to make your own planter. Depending on whether the Styrofoam is already in a box shape or you just have surfaces that you glue together, you can freely choose the capacity.
- Cut the Styrofoam to the desired size.
- Line the box with foil.
- Press the foil firmly in the corners.
- Cut off the excess foil at the top edge.
- Cut a hole at the bottom for the irrigation water to drain into the foil and the Styrofoam.
- Now fill the box with potting soil.
- Put any plants in the planter.
Design plant pots out of Styrofoam
Painting with paint is rather unsuitable for designing a plant pot made of Styrofoam. Often the color does not cover properly and soaks into the material. Unfortunately, it is clear that it is “just” Styrofoam. Instead, you should better dress up your planter. To do this, cut wooden slats to the right size and glue them to the outside of the plant pot - we have put together many more inspirations for designing a plant pot for you here.
