How to make a flower pot yourself?

You can make a flower pot yourself from various materials such as plastic bottles, plaster bandages or cake tins. What is important is sufficient volume, drainage holes for excess water and, if necessary, a hanging device for the plants.

Requirements for a flower pot and design options

A planter should provide a plant with a suitable habitat. Firstly, it must be large enough and definitely have a drainage hole. The pot should be waterproof, look decorative and possibly have a hanging device. If you make the flower pot yourself, low material prices and simple craft instructions are important.

There are no limits to your imagination when it comes to design options. Many materials that are thrown away could be recycled as flower pots, for example a plastic bottle, a used metal mold for a loaf cake or even balloons. Even paper can be converted into a flower pot.

A flower pot made from a plastic bottle

You will need a large and a small plastic bottle (the ones with small “legs” at the bottom are best), spray paint, sandpaper, possibly waterproof markers for writing on and a pair of scissors.

  1. Cut the bottle in half. The lower part is converted into a flower pot.
  2. Drill holes in the bottom of the bottle.
  3. If you want to hang the pot, also drill three or four holes in the edge area.
  4. Lightly sand the outside of the pot to help the paint adhere.
  5. Spray the plastic and let the whole thing dry thoroughly.
  6. If you want, you can paint the primed bottle or write on it with the marker.
  7. Place drainage made of pebbles or expanded clay in the pot.
  8. Fill in potting soil and plant your flower.

A semicircular plaster planter

All you need is a balloon, a piece of plastic wrap and a plaster bandage from the pharmacy.

  1. Inflate the balloon to the desired size.
  2. Wet the plaster bandage as instructed and wrap it halfway around the balloon.
  3. Lay several layers for good stability.
  4. Let the mold dry thoroughly.
  5. Deflate the balloon and remove it.
  6. Drill a drainage hole in the plaster mold.
  7. Line the inside with plastic wrap, as the plaster pot is not waterproof.
  8. Pierce the foil at the drain hole.
  9. Fill in a little expanded clay for drainage and then the potting soil.

Now you can plant a flower. The plaster pot can be placed on a ring or hung up for stability. In this case, holes have to be drilled into the edge for a band.

A cake pan as a flower pot

If you have an old loaf pan, you can convert it into a flower pot in just a few simple steps. First drill a few drainage holes in the bottom, then a hole in each of the four corners (only if you want to hang the mold). Since the cake pans are usually made of stainless metal, attaching foil is not necessary. You can immediately fill the mold with soil and plant a flower.
