Flower bulbs are particularly effective when many flowers are close together. Mixing different varieties should also ensure a spring-like, colorful dream. With the so-called lasagna method it actually comes true.
What is the lasagna method for planting bulbs?
The lasagna method for flower bulbs involves layering different sized bulb types in a deep pot, covering each layer with substrate. This method maximizes available space and ensures an abundance of blooms in spring.
How the lasagne method works
Different ingredients are used for the Italian classic. They are piled up layer by layer. The same is done with the flower bulbs. Several onion installments of different sizes are planted in layers. In this way, the available space is used to the maximum, for maximum flower enjoyment.
Ingredients for the flower lasagne
For a flower lasagna you need various ingredients and utensils. The quantities depend on how large the pot to be planted is or whether you are planting several pots with flower bulbs. You should get this early:
- a large, deep pot with drainage holes
- Substrate mixture of 2/3 potting soil and 1/3 sand
- Gravel or expanded clay for the drainage layer
- Plant fleece
- several different flower bulb varieties
- if applicable. even more fleece, Styrofoam board and brushwood as winter protection
The ideal onion mix
All spring bloomers are suitable for the lasagne method. However, varieties with different planting depths must be combined with each other. Since the planting depth is approximately twice the bulb size, this means that at least one variety with large, medium and small bulbs is required. However, you have complete freedom of choice when it comes to putting together the colors.
Tip
Finally, when all the bulbs are covered with soil, you can add a few other low-growing plants in the pot, such as horned violets. Its flowers fill the last gaps in the flower carpet.
Planting flower bulbs
The flower bulbs are planted in autumn. Proceed as follows:
- Fill in a drainage layer several centimeters high.
- Cover the drainage layer with fleece to prevent mixing with the substrate.
- Put in a layer of the substrate.
- Layer the onions according to size. First the large onions, then the medium-sized and at the very end the smallest onions. Put some soil between two layers of onions.
- Water the flower bulbs well.
- The flower bulbs will overwinter in the pot. Place it in a cool, frost-free cellar at a maximum of 8 degrees Celsius, where it must stay until spring. Alternatively, it can be left outside, well protected, or even temporarily buried in the garden.
Tip
Cover large drainage holes with a large pottery shard to prevent substrate from washing out.
