Anubias nana is one of the smaller spearleaf species. The Bonsai variety is the miniature version of this species. Externally it resembles its relatives, but can fit even in the smallest aquarium. This is what you need to know about this Anubia.
What is special about Anubias Nana Bonsai?
Anubias nana Bonsai is a small aquatic plant that grows 3-5 cm high and 5-10 cm wide. It is easy to care for, requires little light and temperatures of 22-28 degrees Celsius. As an epiphyte, it is attached to stones or roots to expose its rhizome.
The Appearance
The name Bonsai is a clear statement about the size of this Anubia. Otherwise its appearance is not much different than that of the other Anubia nana subspecies. Here are the exact key details of this mini plant:
- only grows to a height of 3 to 5 cm
- Width reaches 5 to 10 cm
- compact growth
- Leaves are approximately 1.5 to 2.5 cm long and 1 to 1.5 cm wide
- shows its flowers even under water
Note:The Anubia “Petite” is available in stores. It is not identical to the “Mini”, but is a separate variety with sharper leaves.
Living conditions
The Anubia nana Bonsai is so small that it can and even should be used in so-called nano aquariums. Because in larger plant communities it would visually disappear. It is often used in so-called aquarium scaping. This is a technique for designing aquarium landscapes.
Anubia Bonsai is easy to care for. In the aquarium, the plant needs water that is 22-28 degrees Celsius and only needs a little light. Their growth is very slow. Owners who are bothered by this can intervene to speed it up. For example, through nutrient additions and the supply of Co2.
Tip
Once the rhizome of this Anubia is several centimeters long, it can be divided for propagation. 2-3 leaves should remain on each piece.
Untie
The rhizome of this mini plant must not be covered by substrate, which is why it is cultivated exclusively as an epiphyte plant. The root of the Anubia is bathed in water.
Stones or dead tree roots can be used as fastening options. Together they form a natural-looking, decorative element. Suitable roots are available in aquarium supply shops.
Until the Anubia nana bonsai can hold on to the stone or root with its own roots, it must be secured. Special aquarium plant glue (€23.00 on Amazon) is also available commercially for this purpose. Fastening can also be done by tying with sewing thread, which is removed again after it has grown.
