Java fern spreads South Asian flair in the aquarium. The more specimens swim in it, the more noticeable their effect is. But does every single plant have to be bought? If propagation is possible at home, the purchase costs can at least be limited to one plant.
How can you successfully propagate Java fern?
To propagate Java fern, allow the plant to produce offshoots that grow from the leaves. Separate the approx. Carefully remove a 4-5 cm cutting and tie it to a stone or root with fishing line or twine. Remove the string when the Java fern has grown.
What are adventitious plants?
Adventitious plants are wild plants that have been able to establish themselves in places outside their original distribution area thanks to human help. This term has found a different use in aquaristics. This refers to plants that have been propagated through cuttings or sinkers.
Formation of offshoots
A Java fern that receives good care will produce new offspring on its own. He does this by sprouting many offshoots and gradually allowing them to grow to a viable size.
The offshoots form on the leaves of the fern and are firmly connected to them. This is how they are cared for and continue to grow. Leaves, roots and even a rhizome are formed. This means that the small adventitious plant has everything it needs to grow independently.
Separating mother ferns
At some point the time comes when the small adventitious plants have to separate from the mother plant. The owner doesn't necessarily have to intervene. Under certain conditions, the plants can complete the cord removal process all on their own.
Each offshoot forms roots and makes them grow longer and longer. He sets off in search of something tangible. As soon as the small Java fern can grab a stone, root or anything else, it forms attachment roots to hold on to it. After he has conquered the object, he breaks the connection to the mother plant.
You can also separate the offshoot yourself and replant it in another place. Wait until the offshoot is approx. 4-5 cm tall. Then it can usually be easily removed from the sheet.
Tie up offshoots
The offshoot has lost its firm anchoring due to the severed connection to the mother plant. However, it must not be planted in sand or gravel as a replacement, otherwise its rhizome will die. Every Java fern must be cultivated as an epiphyte.
