The wet and cold season often brings to light: the garden house roof is getting old and leaking. Water can penetrate under the roof, the wood could become rotten and, in the worst case, mold can form inside, which you can recognize by the musty smell. But that's no reason to worry, because if you react quickly, the damage can usually be easily repaired.

What to do if the garden house roof is leaking?

If the garden house roof is leaking, you should first identify the extent of the damage. Smaller leaks can be repaired with roof paint or cold glue. In the event of major damage, it is recommended to temporarily seal the roof and replace the roof covering in the spring.

Identify the extent of the defect

As soon as you notice that moisture is penetrating the garden house, you should look for the damaged area. There doesn't always have to be big puddles on the floor. Even if individual drops trickle down the wall, you should immediately check the roof for leaks:

  • Empty the house completely on a dry day.
  • Take a strong flashlight or construction lamp and check inside where the water is coming from.

If only a little moisture penetrates, you can almost always repair the damage quite easily. However, if several bitumen shingles or entire sheets of roofing felt have come loose, you should first temporarily seal the roof. Then the roof covering has to be replaced in the spring.

Repair minor damage

If the damaged area is not very large, you can almost always close it with roofing paint or cold glue. To do this, the roof must be dry and clean. You should therefore only carry out this work when the weather is good.

  • Paint the roof paint on the damaged areas.
  • Only use tools that you no longer need, as the paint adheres permanently to the equipment.
  • Alternatively, you can repair the damaged area with roofing felt and cold glue.

If there is no frost, you can check the tightness by pouring plenty of water over the roof.

Tip

If you need to re-lay the roofing felt or re-cover the roof with asph alt shingles, you should postpone this work until spring. During the winter months, temporarily seal the garden house roof with pond liner, which you fold over slightly on the sides and secure with waterproof adhesive tape or a stapler.
