From September, flowers and shoots of the tropical plant begin to wilt. The summer splendor fades more and more quickly until there is nothing left of it. But the tuber is hidden deep in the earth. She lives and carries the beauty genes of the Gloriosa rothschildiana. Let's bring them safely into the coming spring!

How do you properly overwinter the Gloriosa rothschildiana?

To overwinter the Gloriosa rothschildiana successfully, leave the tuber in the pot, stop watering and store it in the dark at 10-18 degrees Celsius. Start driving in March, place in light, water and fertilize.

Risk of frostbite

The Gloriosa tuber is not hardy. If it stays outside, sub-zero temperatures are guaranteed to turn it into a lump of frost. After thawing, all that's left is mud, from which no more green can grow.

These are certainly not good prospects, but they are absolutely avoidable. The tuber can easily handle anything that can extend its life for another year. So let’s fight for survival!

Preparing for rest time

Sometime in September, the Gloriosa rothschildiana, popularly known as the Crown of Fame, signals that it has already achieved enough. It initiates its rest phase by no longer supplying the above-ground parts. It takes a few days until the last leaf has fallen and the last flower has withered.

You can patiently watch the retreat of the crown of glory. Only when it is finished do you worry about overwintering it. But you can also help. You can cut off all of your shoots close to the ground at the beginning of the wilting phase. But protect your hands with gloves while doing this. Gloriosa rotschildiana is poisonous.

Tip

As soon as the crown of glory begins to wilt, you must stop watering immediately!

Storage location for the tuber

The tuber can remain in the pot, but must be moved if the temperature drops below 5 degrees Celsius. After it has taken up residence in a lightless room with a temperature of 10 to max. 18 degrees Celsius, it no longer needs any care, but rather absolute peace. This means:

  • do not water
  • do not fertilize
  • don't move
  • don't touch

Note:Warm living spaces are not suitable for overwintering the Gloriosa rothschildiana because the air from the heating system is very hard on it.

Spring Awakening

From March you can advance the Gloriosa. At this time the first green is already appearing, but she still has to stay in the house. Check the plant for pest infestation and give it a larger pot if necessary.

Now place the tuber in a bright place, for example on the windowsill. Direct sun must be avoided completely at the beginning and then the dose must be gradually increased. With the first above-ground shoots, watering and fertilizing are resumed in small quantities. The wintering period ends in mid-May.
