Ismene has to spend the winter in the house! Otherwise you won't be able to get any flowers or even a leaf out of it the following year. But freedom from frost alone is not enough for her. You need to be well prepared for optimal wintering.

Start of wintering

The Ismene, also known as the beautiful lily, is ready for overwintering as soon as the above-ground parts of the plant have completely withered. You should not force an earlier move to winter quarters by resorting to scissors. Because the onion has to get the nutrients back from the leaves. You should only remove faded flowers so that seed formation does not consume energy.

Preparation

After the foliage of the beautiful lily is completely dry, you can remove it and then carefully dig up the bulbs. Long roots can be shortened. The tubers are spread out on newspaper in a cool room. As soon as the adhering soil is dry, it is shaken off. The tubers still have to dry for a few more weeks.

Tip

Don't be tempted to dry the tubers in the sun or in a warm room, this is harmful to them.

Winter quarters

Dry onions are wrapped in newspaper or placed in a basket with wood shavings. This is how you overwinter the beautiful lily in its winter quarters.

  • dark
  • cool, at 8-10 degrees Celsius
  • without temperature fluctuations

No care is required during the rest period. The tubers are neither touched nor moved.

End of wintering

After the ice saints, the tubers can be planted outside at a planting depth of 8-10 cm. But then it takes a long time until they show their flowers. It is better if you grow them indoors from March onwards.

The roots are cut back a little and the bulb is planted. The pot goes into a bright and warm place. The soil is watered regularly. From mid-May the plant can be taken out in the pot or planted in the bed.
