The monk's pepper is said to have a long existence in the garden. In winter, however, he will not be able to avoid the frost. The confrontation will show who emerges victorious. But then it might be too late for any rescue. It shouldn't come to that!
Tolerates frost to a certain extent
Chasteberry, botanically Vitex agnus-castus, is considered only moderately hardy. But in mild regions orWith winter protection measures, the shrub can be cultivated outside all year round. As best as possible, its root base should be covered with leaves (€48.00 on Amazon) in autumn. A sheltered location where the wind can hardly reach it is also advantageous.
Frostbite is commonplace
The bare branches of the monk's pepper can do little to counteract high temperatures below zero. However, wrapping this sprawling shrub in fleece is an impossibility. So in the spring you have to check what has survived above the surface of the earth. Usually a few branches, and occasionally almost everything, will be frozen.
Don't give up on chasteberry. It shows itself to be strong in survival and usually sprouts new plants, even if this may take some time. Cut back all frozen shoots in spring. Wait until new growth appears, then you can clearly see where to use the scissors. Or cut back completely to 20 cm, as some garden centers recommend.
Support with good care
Help the monk's pepper get going with good care. For example, he loves compost. Its nutrients support it in the formation of new shoots. By the way, frost cannot affect the flowers because they only appear on annual shoots.
Dislike of winter wetness
What the monk's pepper doesn't tolerate well in winter is wetness. Of course you don't transplant an old bush. But should you propagate a new specimen, then at least plant it near a house wall so that it has a protective eave over it.
Chasteberry in the bucket
All chasteberry varieties can be cultivated in a large container. Then you shouldn't rely on protective measures in the fall. The shrub must overwinter indoors. The fact that it loses its leaves before the cold snap makes overwintering easier for us:
