The water plague originated in North America, but has now also become native to us. Its lush growth in the local climate suggests that it can cope well with large temperature fluctuations. Where are your limits in this regard?
What is the ideal temperature range for waterweed?
The waterweed tolerates temperatures from near 0°C to over 20°C, with the ideal temperature range being between 15 and 24°C. In winter, the pond should be at least 60 cm deep to withstand temperatures of 4 °C. Constant temperatures without major fluctuations are recommended in the aquarium.
Large tolerance range
The water plague has a high temperature tolerance. It can handle temperatures close to zero and also values above 20 °C. It is therefore not only a suitable aquarium plant, but can also grow permanently outside in the pond. Only the Argentine waterweed is more sensitive to cold and could freeze to death outside in winter.
Tip
The Argentine Waterweed needs to be planted deeper to increase its chances of survival. Alternatively, a piece of it can overwinter in an aquarium and be placed back on the pond water in spring.
Temperatures in winter
The lower limit is 4 °C. That's why the waterweed reliably survives harsh winters deep in the pond, in zones that don't freeze over. Consequently, the pond should be at least 60 cm deep. In autumn the shoots of waterweed turn brown and sink to the bottom of the pond, but in winter the plant reliably sprouts new ones.
Temperatures in summer
Even if the water plague survives cold water. It feels comfortable in a warm environment and only then grows visibly. It just shouldn't get too warm for her.
- ideal temperature range is 15-24 °C
- Temperature should not permanently rise above 26 °C
The warmer the water, the more abundant waterweed grows. This can go so far that it displaces other plants and therefore has to be fought.
Temperatures in the aquarium
The aquarium has warm water all year round. That's why the waterweed remains evergreen in it. However, since it can only withstand temperatures of around 28 °C for a short time, it is less suitable for tropical aquariums.
The large plant can run through the aquarium from bottom to top with its long shoots. It can be exposed to different temperatures in different water layers. Even if the individual values are acceptable to her, she is still sensitive to these differences.
Maintain a constant temperature in the aquarium by using tank floor heating while ensuring adequate water flow.
