A hedge is not always suitable as an enclosure, for example because there is not enough space or you are afraid of the regular work of pruning. You can find out what other options there are to protect the garden from prying eyes in the following article.
What alternatives are there to hedges in the garden?
As an alternative to hedges, privacy fences, brick privacy elements or modern gabions are available. These options are space-saving, easy to care for and available in different materials and designs to suit your individual garden design.
A privacy fence creates intimacy
Privacy fences can be easily integrated into the garden design. They create a cozy atmosphere, but at the same time take up little space and are therefore also suitable for small properties. The elements required for such a fence are made from different materials and a variety of designs, so that they can be easily tailored to local conditions.
When setting up the privacy screen, you should consider the following points:
- Use sufficiently thick square pieces of wood for fastening.
- These are anchored in the ground using impact sleeves.
- In very windy areas, lateral stabilization using storm anchor posts is recommended.
The brick privacy screen
High walls form a stable fence around the property. If you want a green enclosure but your neighbor doesn't, you can plant one side of it with climbing plants or plant the gaps in a natural stone wall.
All garden walls require a foundation that can be easily laid even by laypeople. In order for the small structure to be statically stable, it should reach eighty centimeters into the ground up to the frost line.
With dry stone walls, no water is allowed to penetrate from above. Therefore, the top of the wall should be covered accordingly.
Walls made of bricks or concrete blocks must be built with mortar. With a dry stone wall, the corners and edges of the stones as well as the careful construction ensure stability.
Modern Gabions
These baskets filled with stones are becoming increasingly popular. These are available pre-assembled in hardware stores in various widths and heights. With these, the privacy screen can be implemented relatively easily on your own.
Tip
How high a privacy screen can be is determined by the development plans of the cities and municipalities. If the alternative to the hedge is also understood as a “border device”, i.e. as a boundary to the neighboring property, you must ask your neighbor for permission.
