Orchids and therefore Phalaenopsis are not exactly easy-care houseplants. Thanks to numerous hybrid breedings, they have nevertheless found their way into many living rooms. However, when and how they are cut is a secret for many orchid owners.
Can you shorten the stem of the Phalaenopsis orchid?
Phalaenopsis orchids do not have a typical trunk for shortening. However, dried parts of the plant, such as flower shoots and old roots, can be cut off at any time. Fresh, green parts should only be removed if there is disease or pests. Always use a sharp, disinfected tool.
When can the Phalaenopsis be cut?
The Phalaenopsis does not actually have a trunk, so in principle it cannot be shortened. However, you can cut off dried plant parts from your Phalaenopsis at any time. This affects both the stem after flowering and the old roots. Ideally, you should always cut within the dry parts.
You should only cut fresh, still green plant parts if they show signs of disease or pests. It is best to remove the entire affected leaf straight away and keep the cut area as small as possible. The more you cut away from the Phalaenopsis, the longer the plant will need to recover and bloom again.
What should you pay attention to when cutting?
Whenever you prune your Phalaenopsis, use a very sharp, disinfected knife or a new razor blade. Unfortunately, orchids are very susceptible to infections. The interfaces should dry a little before coming into contact with water. It therefore makes sense not to water the Phalaenopsis for a few days if the cut would get wet.
If you want to cut an offshoot or kindle, wait until it has developed several leaves and roots a few centimeters long. Leave about two centimeters of dry stem/flower stem on both cut sides to protect against possible infections.
The most important things in brief:
- Only cut fresh plant parts if really necessary
- Cut the flower shoot only after it has dried out
- be sure to use a sharp, disinfected knife or razor blade
- If necessary, disinfect the fresh interface with carbon powder
Tip
Wait before cutting the flower shoot until it is completely dry. With a bit of luck, your Phalaenopsis will develop children on it.
