How can I dry apple slices effectively?

You can dry apple slices in different ways: in the dehydrator, in the oven, in the sun or in the microwave. With all methods, it is important that the apple slices do not lie on top of each other and can dry evenly.

This is how the apple rings become crispy

So that the apple slices can be dried, you must first wash the apples, which should preferably come from organic farming, well. They don't need to be peeled because the peel is particularly aromatic. It also contains a lot of fiber, which has a positive effect on digestion.

Remove the core with an apple corer and cut the fruit in half. The slices will be completely even if you then cut the fruit thinly with a cucumber slicer or food processor. If you prefer crisp apple slices, the pieces should not be too thick.

So that the dried fruit retains its beautiful color, you can drizzle it with lemon. If you like it a little sweeter, you can add a little sugar:

  1. Boil sugar to taste with lemon juice and water.
  2. Let the brew cool down.
  3. Put the apple slices in it briefly.

Dry apple slices in the dehydrator

This method is very straightforward. Since the fruit is dried at a low temperature, vitamins and nutrients are largely retained.

Procedure

  1. Distribute the prepared apple slices on the drying racks so that they do not touch each other.
  2. Assemble the device and dry the fruit for six to eight hours at 42 degrees.

Dry apple slices in the oven

If you only want to make dried fruit yourself occasionally, it is not worth purchasing a special device. You can also easily dry the apple rings in the oven. Make several sheets at once, it saves energy.

Procedure

  1. Line the baking trays with baking paper and spread the fruits on them so that they do not touch each other.
  2. Close the flap and insert a wooden spoon between the oven and the door. This allows the moisture to escape.
  3. The apple slices become particularly crispy if you switch on the lowest temperature, usually 50 degrees, of the top and bottom heat. Drying takes about seven hours.

Drying apple slices in the sun

If you want to save energy and have enough space in a sunny place, you can dry the apple slices outdoors. The prepared apples are placed on racks and covered with a cloth. Alternatively, you can thread the pieces onto a string and hang them up.

Make sure that the apple slices do not touch each other. This is the only way they will dry evenly.

Place the drying racks in a place protected from the weather. Drying outdoors takes between two and seven days, depending on the weather conditions.

Darren in the microwave

Only small portions of apple slices can be dried in the microwave oven. This variant is therefore more suitable if, for example, you want to quickly make a delicious snack for an evening watching TV.

Procedure

  1. Place apple slices side by side on a plate and place in the microwave.
  2. Heat at full power for about one to two minutes.
  3. Open the door so that the moisture can escape.
  4. Set the microwave to the lowest setting and let it run for 15 minutes until the desired crispiness is achieved.

Tip

The dried apples become particularly aromatic if you sprinkle them with a little cinnamon before drying.
