No matter which type of apple you choose: crunchy fruits from your own garden simply taste incomparably delicious. Unfortunately, not all fruits can be stored equally well and should therefore be processed within a reasonable amount of time.

How can I preserve apple slices?

To preserve apple slices, prepare the apples by peeling, coreing and cutting them into wedges. You can then cook them either with raisins, spices and sugar or without sugar by putting the apple slices in jars and sealing them airtight - this way they will last for a long time.

Preparing apples

In order to bring as much flavor as possible into the preserving jar, you should only harvest fully ripe fruits on a dry day. Sort out worm-eaten fruit directly.

  • Wash apples thoroughly and cut out any damaged areas.
  • Peel the fruit, quarter it and remove the core.
  • Cut into wedges that are not too thin.

The principle of preserving

Depending on the recipe, the still boiling hot fruits are filled into jars or cooked directly in a preserving jar. The heat in the preserving pot or oven kills germs. When the food cools down, a vacuum forms that seals the jars airtight. This means that the cooked fruit has a very long shelf life.

Preserve apple slices with raisins and spices

Raisins, lemon juice and cinnamon give the apples a very interesting aroma.

Ingredients:

1 kg apples, weighed cleaned

1 liter of water

200 g sugar

100 g raisins

1 packet of vanilla sugar with real vanilla

2 cl rum

Juice of one lemon

1 tsp cinnamon1 pinch of cardamom

Preparation

  1. Prepare apples and put them in a pot.
  2. Add sugar, raisins, vanilla sugar and lemon juice. Mix everything together.
  3. Bring to the boil and simmer until the apple pieces are soft but still have a bite.
  4. Add the rum and spices.
  5. Bring to the boil and immediately pour into jars with twist-off caps.
  6. Turn the jars onto the lid and let them cool down.

Cooking apple slices without sugar

Less sweet but at least as tasty are apple slices that you can cook without any additional sweetness.

Ingredients

1 kg apples, weighed cleaned

1 liter of water

Juice of one lemonTo taste: ginger, cinnamon and vanilla

Preparation

  1. Boil the water with the spices and lemon juice.
  2. Pour apples into Weck or twist-off jars up to three centimeters below the rim and pour in the water until they are completely covered.
  3. Close the jars tightly and place them in a large cooking or cooking pot. Fill this with enough water so that two thirds of the glasses are in the water bath.
  4. Bring the water to the boil, put the lid on, turn off the heat and leave the apple slices in the pot for about thirty minutes.
  5. Remove and let cool.

Tip

After preserving, be sure to check whether all jars are sealed airtight.
