Rosehips are a superfood from local nature. Rose fruits are popular in the kitchen because of their he alth-promoting ingredients. Correct processing is important so that the valuable properties can fully develop.
How to properly grind rosehip seeds?
To grind rosehip seeds, first dry the fruits at 40 degrees, e.g. in the oven or in the raw food dryer. Then grind the dried rose hip pieces into powder using a high-performance blender such as the Vitamix TNC 5200. Pause every two minutes to cool down.
Ingredients
Rosehips contain some substances that have a positive effect on he alth. They are valued in the therapy of osteoarthritis because of the galactolipids they contain. Polyphenols, fatty acids and vitamin C round off the nutrient cocktail. The powder of fruits and seeds has anti-inflammatory, pain-relieving and antioxidant effects. Since both vitamins and the galactolipid are heat sensitive, you must process the harvest raw at a maximum of 40 degrees Celsius.
Which rose hips are suitable?
Garden roses were bred for characteristics such as flowering ability or flower color. Even though many of these trees develop rose hip fruits, they are behind wild roses when it comes to he alth-promoting properties. Their fruits are smaller, making them not worth harvesting. Instead, collect from nature. The native dog rose (Rosa canina) grows in bushes, on the edges of forests, paths or roads.
Harvesting and processing
Collect the mock fruits when they are ripe. Fruit ripening occurs late and extends from October to November. You can rarely collect mature rose hips as early as September. The degree of ripeness cannot be determined by the color, but by gently pressing it. Even immature specimens shine in bright red tones. They are ready to harvest when the fruit is soft.
Drying and grinding
400 grams of rose fruits produce around 300 grams of pulp and 100 grams of seeds. You don't necessarily have to remove them from the meat. Remove the remaining flowers from the fruits and cut them in half. Spread the yield on a wire rack and dry it at 40 degrees in the oven or in the raw food dryer. Then grind the dried rose hip pieces into powder.
Notes on devices:
- hand-operated coffee grinders with metal grinders crush the material
- Mortars prove equally unsuitable
- High-performance blenders are a good choice
- Vitamix TNC 5200 delivers the best results as test winner from Stiftung Warentest
Tip
The ground material heats up quickly when processed in the mixer. Therefore, take a break every two minutes to cool down.
