How do you wash lettuce properly?

To wash lettuce, first cut out the stalk, loosen the leaves and place them in a sink with water. Gently move the leaves, wait until they float to the surface, carefully remove them and let them drain. Finally dry in a salad spinner.

Preparing lettuce

With one cut you can remove all the leaves of the lettuce and wash it immediately afterwards:

  1. Start by pouring water into the sink.
  2. Cut the stalk out of the lettuce in a circle and add the leaves to the water.
  3. Wash thoroughly once or twice. Gently move the leaves through the water.
  4. To allow sand and dirt to settle, wait until the leaves float to the surface.
  5. Remove carefully and drain in a colander.
  6. Pluck the leaves a little smaller, removing any unsightly spots and spin the lettuce dry in a salad spinner.

Wash outdoor lettuce

Unwanted tenants can sometimes be found in the lettuce from your own garden. These are no reason to throw away the salad because they can be washed off quite easily.

  1. Put lukewarm water in the sink.
  2. Add some s alt and agitate the water so that the crystals dissolve completely.
  3. Put in the lettuce leaves and leave in the s alted water for a few minutes.
  4. The aphids are now swimming on the surface of the water. You can use a tea strainer to strain out most of the little pests before lifting the leaves out of the water.
  5. Now rinse the salad thoroughly with clean water.

Tip

Lettuce is not only available in the well-known green version, but also in other varieties. Red lettuce is becoming increasingly popular because it has very tender leaves, has a mild taste and looks great in a mixed salad. Red lettuce is also less likely to be affected by lice, as the animals prefer fresh yellow-green and avoid the dark leaves.
