Onion juice is a proven home remedy for coughs. In this article we explain how you can make the natural medicine yourself and who it is suitable for.
How do you make onion juice?
To make onion juice yourself, peel and dice a fresh onion, put it in a screw-top jar, add honey or sugar and close the jar. Place it in the fridge for a few hours until juice forms.
Ingredients
- 1 fresh onion
- liquid honey
If you avoid animal products, you can replace the honey with cane sugar or a vegan sweetener. You should also use sugar instead of honey for children under one year old.
The alliin contained in the onion is largely responsible for the intense taste of the juice. Children sometimes find onion juice made from onions too spicy. Therefore, it is best to use milder vegetable onions for the little ones.
Preparation
- Peel the onion and cut it into rough cubes.
- Pour into a clean, rinsed screw-top jar.
- Pour the sweetener over it and close the container.
- Put in the fridge for a few hours until juice has formed.
- Use granulated sugar, shaking occasionally.
The juice will keep well for about three days when sealed well. If the cold isn't over yet, you should make fresh onion juice.
How often should cough syrup be taken?
You can take this natural remedy three times a day for coughs, or even hourly if symptoms are severe. The dose for children is one teaspoon, for adults two. Leave the onion juice in your mouth for a while so that the local cough suppressant effect occurs quickly.
Can onion juice be overdosed?
An overdose of the drug is unlikely. If you want to be on the safe side, you should not consume more than 50 grams of fresh onion daily. The reason is the substance diphenylamine contained in onions, which, if consumed over a long period of time and in very high doses, can lead to kidney damage.
What side effects can occur?
If you are allergic to any of the ingredients in the onion, you must not take onion juice.
Known side effects of onion juice include contact eczema and irritation of the nasal mucosa and/or conjunctiva. If you notice this, contact your doctor.
Tip
Always close the container with the onion juice carefully so that the valuable ingredients do not disappear. In addition, the intense smell settles unpleasantly in the refrigerator.
