Anyone who has an apple tree knows the problem: In autumn so many fruits ripen that it becomes necessary to preserve at least some of the fruit. In the following article you will find various ways to preserve apples.
How can you preserve apples?
Preserving apples can be done by boiling, drying or making apple juice. Cooked apples in jars last a long time, dried apple rings are a he althy snack and homemade apple juice stores well.
Cooking apples
In addition to the fruit, sugar and spices, all you need to preserve the fruit is suitable containers with a glass lid, a rubber ring and a metal clip. Alternatively, twist-off glasses are suitable. You can preserve the apples in an automatic preserver or in the oven.
Recipe:
- Peel the apples and carefully cut out any bruises.
- Quart the fruits and cut out the core.
- Cook a broth from a liter of water, 300 grams of sugar, a packet of vanilla sugar and a little cinnamon if you like.
- Pile the apples in the jars as tightly as possible.
- Fill up with the hot stock; a two centimeter wide edge should remain at the top.
- Close and place on the rack of the preserving pot.
- Pour enough water so that the containers are halfway up.
- Cook at 90 degrees for thirty minutes.
Alternatively, you can place the glasses in the oven's drip pan and pour two centimeters of water on them. Place it on the bottom rack, set the temperature to 180 degrees and keep an eye on the food being preserved. As soon as small bubbles appear in the jars, switch off and leave the apples in the oven for another thirty minutes.
Drying apples
Dried apples are a he althy and figure-friendly snack:
- Wash the fruits, core them and cut them into rings.
- Stir 3 tablespoons of lemon juice and 3 tablespoons of sugar into a liter of water and bathe the apple rings in it.
- Drain and place side by side on a baking tray lined with baking paper.
- Put in the oven. Do not close the door completely to allow the moisture to escape.
- Dry at 50 degrees for about 5 hours.
Alternatively, you can thread the apple rings and air dry them or put them in a dehydrator.
Make apple juice
You can easily make this yourself. If you fill the apple juice into clean bottles and pasteurize them, you can also preserve not-so-pretty apples this way.
Tip
It is little known that apples that have been placed in water at fifty degrees for about two minutes keep significantly better. It is important that you let the fruit dry for eight hours after the bath. Then store the apples in a cool, dark place on racks that have previously been wiped with a vinegar cloth.
