When does a beech hedge sprout after cutting?
A beech hedge sprouts in spring between the beginning of April and mid-May. After pruning, budding can last until the beginning of June. To accelerate sprouting, we recommend proper pruning, regular fertilization and sufficient watering of the hedge plants.
When does a beech hedge sprout?
Usually a beech hedge sprouts in spring betweenbeginning of Aprilandmid-May. European beech (Fagus sylvatica) and hornbeam (Carpinus betulus) are among the hedge plants that sprout relatively late.
The trees compensate for the shortcoming of late budding by keeping the leaves for a long time. A beech hedge in particular provides good privacy protection until late winter.
When does a beech hedge sprout after pruning?
After pruning in February/March, a beech hedge sprouts untilbeginning of June because the hedge plants have to regenerate over a longer period of time. You can accelerate budding with these measures:
- Prune the beech hedge at the buds (cutting point just above a leaf or a bud) with one-handed secateurs or two-handed hedge trimmers (€39.00 on Amazon).
- Following the main pruning in February and the maintenance pruning at the end of June, fertilize hedge plants with compost and horn shavings.
- Do not fertilize beech hedges from the beginning of August so that the shoots mature before the first frost.
Tip
Accelerate beech hedge budding
If a beech hedge does not sprout, the most common causes are dryness, waterlogging or a lack of nutrients. Thorough watering helps against drought stress. If you can determine waterlogging as the cause, work a 5 cm high layer of sand under the hedge plants. Nutrient deficiencies can be remedied by fertilizing with 3-5 liters of compost per square meter. If you cut back the beech hedge in March and June, you can accelerate growth and budding.
