Which plants should I combine fennel with?

Fennel goes well with tomatoes, radishes, various salads, cauliflower, peas, celery, cucumbers and floribunda. In pots, fennel can also be combined with herbs such as basil, sage, parsley and spinach.

What factors should you consider when combining fennel?

In order not to make life difficult for fennel, but to surround it with companion plants that support its growth, strengthen its he alth and at the same time flatter it visually, the following factors should be taken into account:

  • Flower color: yellow
  • Flowering time: July to September
  • Location requirements: sunny, deep, calcareous and nutrient-rich soil
  • Growth height: up to 200 cm

While it is still very small in the first few months, it literally shoots up during its flowering period. You should therefore take the impressive growth height into account when looking for suitable companion plants for fennel.

So that the fennel can grow vigorously and its bulb forms well, it needs a sunny location. His neighbors should also prefer this and his demands on the soil.

If you want to take advantage of fennel's ornamental value, you should consider its flowering period. Only from mid-summer can it shine with its flowers in conjunction with other plants.

Combine fennel in the bed

Numerous vegetables go well with fennel in a vegetable patch. It is important that you keep a sufficiently large distance and plant the fennel so that it is not shaded by the other vegetables. In addition to vegetable beds, fennel can also be planted in perennial beds. Unusual, but highly decorative, it looks next to roses, for example.

Ideal plant neighbors for fennel include:

  • Tomatoes

The fennel and the floribunda rose harmonize with each other because they like a sun-drenched location on deep and nutrient-rich soil. Both spiced and vegetable fennel are suitable for combination with floribunda roses. The feathery foliage of the fennel forms a tasteful greenery for the roses in the background or in the middle of a group of different colored rose varieties. Yellow roses go particularly well with fennel as they are in harmony with its flower color.

Combine fennel with celery

Fennel and celery feel at home next to each other in a vegetable patch. They both have the ability to enhance each other's aroma. They also occupy a similar location and fit together given their height.

Combine fennel with peas

While the peas enrich the soil with nitrogen, the fennel in the neighborhood benefits from it. The two fit together perfectly. In addition, tied up peas do not take up much space for the fennel. Regarding the location, both enjoy a lot of sun.
