They present fabulously beautiful flower candles in the most dazzling colors. But when they stand alone, lupins often appear elegant and austere. However, with the appropriate companion plants, it is possible to take this expression away and make them appear looser, wilder and more playful.
Which plants go well with lupins?
Lupins can be optimally combined with floribunda roses, cranesbills, ornamental garlic, summer phlox, ornamental sage, daisies, poppies and irises. Pay attention to suitable flowering times, growth heights and location requirements in order to create harmonious plant communities.
What factors should you consider when combining lupins?
In order to emphasize the beauty of the lupins and at the same time loosen them up a bit, you should consider the following factors when looking for suitable companion plants:
- Flower color: white, yellow, pink, violet, red or blue
- Flowering time: May to August
- Location requirements: sunny, permeable and lime-poor soil
- Growth height: up to 120 cm (garden lupine)
Lupins bloom in early summer and are present until mid-summer before gradually becoming unattractive. Therefore, you should specifically choose companion plants that bloom at the same time as you or are in the spotlight afterwards.
Lupins like to reach high with their large inflorescences. Therefore, pay attention to the size of the planting partners and place them in front of or behind the lupins.
Also consider the location requirements of lupins and choose appropriate planting partners.
Combine lupins in the bed or in the bucket
Due to their size, lupins are the ideal choice for background planting. In front of them, contrasting specimens fit in impressively as companion plants. Contrasts create, among other things, different flower shapes and flower colors. Things get even more sophisticated if you specifically plant perennials in front of the lupins, which bloom in late summer and into autumn. They replace the lupins, which become less attractive after flowering, and attract attention.
Fantastic combinations with lupins include:
- Summer Phlox
- ornamental onion
- ornamental sage
- Flower roses
- Daisies
- Poppy
- Irises
- Storksbill
Combine lupins with floribunda roses
A pretty combination is created with floribunda roses planted in the foreground of lupins. They stay low and don't steal the show from the colorful lupins. They go well with lupins because they have similar location requirements and bloom from May/June.
Combine lupine with cranesbill
The cranesbill becomes an expert. It visually loosens up the lupins and hides their faded inflorescences from August onwards. Due to its lower height, it is placed in front of the lupins - preferably in groups.
Combine lupine with ornamental garlic
The ornamental garlic also goes well with the lupins. It forms an intoxicating contrast with its impressive flower balls and seems to literally surround the lupine flower candles. Red, yellow and white lupins go particularly well with violet ornamental onions.
Combine lupins as a bouquet in the vase
It is undeniable: lupins set the tone in a bouquet. They owe this to the considerable size of their inflorescences, but their colors are also sensational. It is best to combine them with flowers that produce smaller and differently structured flowers, such as roses or delphiniums. If you want the bouquet to appear less elegant and more wild and fresh, combine the lupins with daisies, lady's mantle and the maiden in the green.
