From April onwards, the ranunculus presents us with their perfectly shaped flower balls in fresh and intensely bright colors. They are reminiscent of a miniature version of peonies. If you want to make the colorful spectacle flourish even more, combine your ranunculus with other plants.
Which plants go well with ranunculus?
Ranunculus can be excellently combined with spring bloomers such as tulips, daffodils, goose cress and blue cushions as well as light shrubs such as lilacs, hyacinths and magnolias to create a harmonious flower picture in the bed or in pots.
What factors should you consider when combining ranunculus?
In order to maintain and even increase the visual value of the ranunculus, you should consider the following factors when combining them with other plants:
- Flower color: white, yellow, orange, red or pink, rarely two-colored
- Flowering time: April to June
- Location requirements: Partially shaded, well-drained and moist soil
- Growth height: 20 to 40 cm
Combine ranunculus according to their flower color. Yellow varieties harmonize beautifully with red-flowering plants, while orange ranunculus, for example, look stunning next to blue flowers.
When making your combination, remember that the ranunculus blooms in spring. Either the companion plants bloom at the same time or later in order to keep the location attractive for a long time.
Since ranunculus remain quite small at a maximum of 40 cm, they feel best in the foreground. Your planting partners should be able to fit in there too.
Combine ranunculus in the bed or in the bucket
Typical spring bloomers such as tulips and daffodils are the ideal neighbors for ranunculus. They bloom at the same time and are not intimidated by a partially shaded location. Ground-covering plants also go well with ranunculus, creating a lush sea of flowers around them. But that's not all: Ranunculus are also ideal for planting under light shrubs and trees. They like their shady foliage.

Combine ranunculus with goose cress
The goose cress, like the ranunculus, feels extremely comfortable in partial shade. The flowers that appear there are exuberant and present at the same time as those of the ranunculus. Typically white goose cress, for example, can be beautifully highlighted with red or pink ranunculus.
Combine ranunculus with lilac
The lilac clearly towers over the ranunculus, which is why it is suitable for being planted under ranunculus. In the foot area, the ranunculus can reveal their flowers from April - and therefore at the same time as the lilac - and set impressive accents. Especially if you plant the ranunculus in groups under the lilacs, the attractive effect will not be missed.
Combine ranunculus with blue cushions
Since the blue cushion is only 15 cm high, it should be placed in front of the ranunculus. The ranunculus, for their part, will tower over the blue cushion and present it attractively. Compositions of blue-flowered blue cushions with yellow ranunculus are extremely enriching. The picture of blue cushions and white or pink ranunculus looks a little calmer.
Combine ranunculus as a bouquet in the vase
The short stems of the ranunculus find support in small vases. They delight in combination with colorful spring flowers such as tulips. The late-blooming ranunculus are well suited for a bouquet of roses.
