In winter it decorates its surroundings with its bright red berries. These are their main identifying feature. But other aspects also make the false berry an attractive plant that looks particularly attractive when combined with other plants.
Which plants go well with the mock berry?
The mock berry harmonizes best with plants that prefer acidic soils and partially shaded to shady locations, such as juniper, bud heath, Christmas rose, witch hazel, snowdrop, yew, skimmia and peat myrtle. Their combination creates attractive contrasts in beds, balcony boxes or bouquets.
What factors should you consider when combining the mock berries?
Anyone who combines the false berry in an unfavorable way will not be able to enjoy the company for long. Therefore, consider the following factors when choosing companion plants for the mockberry:
- Flower color: white to light pink
- Foliage: evergreen, shiny
- Fruit decorations: bright red berries from October
- Location requirements: Partly shaded to shady, humus and acidic soil
- Growth height: up to 20 cm
The false berry is stubborn when it comes to its location and does not like to adapt to other circumstances. Since it requires a partially shaded to shady location on an acidic substrate, its planting partners should also prefer this.
The false berry presents its characteristic fruit decoration from October onwards. If you want to use this for contrast, the accompanying plants should be visible in autumn and winter.
Since the false berry remains very small, plants with a similarly low height are best suited to it.
Combine mock berries in the bed or in the balcony box
Due to its location requirements, the mock berry harmonizes wonderfully with heather plants and ericaceous plants. Like them, they like acidic soil. At best, your companion plants should prefer to absorb the sun's light in a subdued manner rather than in full. In order to be able to enjoy the combination with the mock berry even in winter, it is recommended to choose planting partners that are at their best in winter.
You can achieve flattering combinations with the following plants, among others:
- Christmas Rose
- Magic Haze
- Snowdrops
- Yew
- Bud heather

Combine mock berries with juniper
The juniper likes acidic soils and is attractive all year round thanks to its evergreen conifers. The false berry can take advantage of its dark appearance. Plant the small berry in front of a juniper. Not only will their red berries flash there, but also their magical flowers.
Combine mock berries with bud heather
The bud heather likes a sunny location and a soil that resembles a typical forest floor just as much as the false berry. Their height is also similar. But these are not the only reasons why the two are a good fit for each other. They also have a visually complementary effect and are a valuable decoration, especially in autumn and winter.
Combine mock berries with Christmas rose
The false berry seems to be waiting for the Christmas rose to bloom between December and January. The white flowers of the Christmas rose form an intoxicating counterpart to the fiery red berries of the blackberry. A winter arrangement of plants could hardly look more beautiful.
Combine mock berries as a bouquet in the vase
The mock berry is a welcome player for autumnal decorations and small bouquets. You can cut off individual branches and drape them in a vase. The berry decoration goes well with numerous flowers, but also with green decorative plants such as leather fern and eucalyptus.
