How can I make my own vole bait?

To make your own vole bait, use fresh root vegetables such as celery, carrots, potatoes or Jerusalem artichokes, as well as apples. Place a selection in the cleaned live trap, wearing odorless gloves to avoid human odor.

What do voles eat?

Voles are pure herbivores and particularly like to nibble on roots, vegetables and grass. A “normal” mouse bait made from ham or cheese is not at all attractive to voles. Instead, you should resort to vole food.

Make non-toxic vole bait

Root vegetables are ideal as vole bait. It's best to put a selection of different treats in the trap so that every vole taste is catered for. Voles also find apples appetizing. It is important that the vegetables are fresh and therefore smell delicious.

Here are a few ideas for vole bait:

  • Celery
  • Apples
  • Carrots
  • Potatoes
  • Jerusalem Jerusalem artichoke

Avoid strong-smelling roots such as garlic, onions or even herbs!

Fit the vole trap with bait

You can do a lot of things wrong when fitting the vole trap. To ensure that the mouse really falls into the trap, you should note the following:

  • Do not under any circumstances touch the vole trap with your bare hands!
  • Clean them with water without detergent before use!
  • Leave it outside (preferably in the rain) for a few days so that it loses any human, plastic or chemical smell.
  • Fit the vole trap with the bait using odorless gloves.

Voles have very sensitive noses and naturally avoid people and their smell.

Poisonous vole bait

If you want to poison the vole, you should use commercial vole bait. There are different vole poisons, which we will introduce to you here. The costs are between €15 and €20. We strongly advise against poisoning voles. The poisons not only harm the vole, but also potentially other animals and the environment.
