Bananas taste best when the peel is yellow and the flesh is still firm. Unfortunately, the fruits turn brown quickly and must therefore be consumed quickly. However, with these tips you can ensure that the bananas you just bought last longer.
How can you make bananas last longer?
You can make bananas last longer byproper storage. This includes storing the fruit in a cool place and far away from apples. You should also not buy bananas when they are fully ripe, but rather when they are still a little green.
How should you store bananas so they don't turn brown?
Bananas last longer if stored correctly, which is why it is best to store the tropical fruit as follows:
- separate from other fruits
- especially not with apples!
- hanging instead of lying down, e.g. on hooks or on a special banana stand (often called a “banana tree”)
- Always remove plastic packaging before storage
- store cool
- do not place in the sun or over a warm heater
Bananas look very pretty in a colorful fruit basket, but they stay fresh longer when stored hanging. The reason lies in the possible pressure points that arise when lying down and from which the fruits turn black more quickly.
Do bananas last longer in the fridge?
In fact, bananas last longer if you keep them cool in the vegetable drawer of the refrigerator. But be careful: Green bananas don't belong in the fridge because they don't ripen there. You should first let these turn yellow at room temperature and then put them in the vegetable compartment.
Ripe bananas stay fresh longest if you freeze them - peeled and sliced. Here the fruits last for up to a year and can be used as usual for cakes and desserts.
Why shouldn't you store bananas with apples?
Ripe apples give off the ripening gas ethylene, which is why you should not store bananas and other fruit near them - the fruit will then ripen faster and turn brown quickly. Incidentally, the gas also comes out more strongly from bananas, which is why it is better to store the tropical fruits separately. The reason for this is that the fruits are harvested green due to their wide origin and are only treated with ethylene in special chambers immediately before delivery to the supermarket.
Are there any other tips for making bananas last longer?
In fact, there is another interesting life hack that keeps bananas fresh for a few days longer: Wrap the stems - i.e. H. the stalked end of the fruit – airtight with cling film. This means that less ethylene reaches the fruit and the ripening process slows down.
