Many people think that potting soil is the same as topsoil. But far from it! Find out here how the two types of soil differ fundamentally and for what purposes you should ideally use which soil to achieve the best results.
Is potting soil or topsoil better?
Topsoil, also known agriculturally as topsoil, has grown naturally over decades and containsmore minerals than potting soilIt is therefore more stable. It also contains numerous microorganisms and has active soil life. Artificially processed potting soil is suitable for special new plantings.
What is topsoil?
Topsoil is thetop layer of soil and is about 20 to 30 centimeters thick. It contains important nutrients, minerals and soil organisms - all essential for good plant growth. Below this is the subfloor and the subsurface. If the topsoil has grown naturally, it can store a lot of rainwater and ensures good ventilation in the soil. In Germany, topsoil is even protected by law and must be stored separately. Good purchased topsoil is finely crumbly, clean and free of large roots, debris and rubbish.
What is potting soil and when is it better than topsoil?
Potting soil is artificially prepared soil. It was mixed, sifted, usually sterilized and enriched with additional fertilizer in order to provide sufficient nutrients for the plants for a certain period of time. Potting soil is suitablefor new plantings in beds, pots and containers. It is particularly suitable for planting special plant species that have individual soil requirements. Potting soil in pots should be replaced after three years at the latest, as after this time it is exhausted and can no longer provide the plant with optimal care.
What is the difference between potting soil and topsoil?
A naturally grown topsoil with living soil life cannot be replaced with potting soilwithout loss of quality. If you want to create a completely new garden, for example in the case of a large-scale renovation or new building, good topsoil provides the perfect basis. You can mix this soil with potting soil, compost, fertilizer or humus as needed to adapt it to the needs of the specific plant species you are using.
Tip
How to buy topsoil cheaply
Topsoil for the entire garden can be expensive. It costs between 3 and 12 euros per square meter of garden space, depending on the origin and quality. It's best to get local topsoil from your neighborhood or through classified ads. This is cheaper and particularly sustainable. In addition, it has grown under regional conditions and is therefore perfectly adapted. Topsoil remains at many construction sites.
