Cat grass has a positive effect on your cat's he alth and can be replanted again and again after a one-time purchase. Read here how to do this and how you and your pet can benefit from the plant.
How to plant cat grass correctly?
To plant cat grass yourself, you need seeds, a growing pot and suitable substrate. Soak the seeds in water, fill the pot with soil, press the seeds in and keep the substrate moist. Choose a bright location without direct sun and a room temperature of 15-18 °C.
Is it worth planting cat grass?
Although some pet experts advise against cat grass, the benefits ultimately outweigh the feeding benefits:
- Cat grass helps your cat regurgitate furballs.
- It contains valuable ingredients such as folic acid.
- Cats love to nibble on the stalks.
- Cat grass is a great alternative for indoor cats.
- It is easy to care for and can be propagated easily and inexpensively.
Tip
Even if you don't own a cat, it's worth thinking about planting cat grass. The plant filters pollutants from the air and in this way improves the indoor climate.
Which cat grass?
When purchasing cat grass you can choose from:
- Various varieties of sweet grass such as indoor bamboo, local grains such as barley, oats or wheat.
- Sour grass such as Cyprus grass is also offered for these purposes, but is not suitable as cat grass. The sharp edges of the leaves can cause injuries to the esophagus or inflammation of the stomach lining.
The different types are similar in terms of their effect on digestion. There is hardly any visual difference either. However, indoor bamboo in particular is easy to care for as it only grows slowly after being cut back. The types of grain, on the other hand, do not become woody as quickly, so they serve more as supplementary food and, thanks to their rapid growth, save acquisition costs for new plants.
Plant cat grass yourself
Once you have purchased a pot of cat grass, you can propagate it regularly from now on. First of all, of course, you need seeds. There is also a growing pot and suitable substrate. Planting cat grass is done as described below.
Instructions
- There is no suitable time. You can sow cat grass all year round.
- Soak the seeds in water for about two hours to increase germination.
- Fill a seed pot with soil and press the seeds two centimeters deep.
- Keep the substrate moist. Avoid waterlogging.
Location
Cat grass needs a bright location. However, direct sunlight causes the stalks to burn. The optimal room temperature is 15-18°C. Do not place the pot near a heater.
Substrate
Plant your cat grass in natural garden soil. Potting soil contains too many nutrients that will harm your cat.
