Selection of location and soil preparation – this is how it works
Where roses feel comfortable, they remain loyal to their gardener for many years. Therefore, for royal resistance, choose a location with the following criteria:
- Sunny to sunny with at least 4 to 6 hours of sunshine daily
- Preferably airy so that damp leaves dry quickly
- Nutritious, humus-rich, fresh, moist soil
As deep-rooting roses want a location that is at least 50 cm deep. Therefore, dig up the soil thoroughly and remove roots and stones. Then work in leaf compost and horn shavings with the rake for a rich nutrient buffet as a welcome greeting.
Planting bare-root roses skillfully – these are the details that matter
Naked-root roses are easy on the wallet and are in no way inferior to container plants in terms of beauty. To ensure that the plants take root quickly, important details must be taken into account:
- Place young roses without substrate in a bucket of water for 12 to 24 hours before planting
- Short the root strands by 1 cm before inserting
- Plant each rose so deep that the grafting point is 4-5 cm below the ground
- Cut back all shoots to a length of 10-15 cm
Please do not add mineral fertilizer to the planting hole. Fill the pit with the excavated material, press the soil with your hands and water thoroughly. The generous supply of water continues until a rose has sprouted 10 cm.
Container roses make planting a breeze
The higher purchase price of container roses results in uncomplicated planting. Soak the still potted root balls in water until no more air bubbles appear after a few minutes. Only then do you pot up the roses. Neither the roots nor the shoots are cut back. It is important to note the planting depth. As with bare-root roses, the grafting site should be 5 cm deep in the soil. Thorough watering completes the expert planting.
Don’t forget to pile up – here’s how to do it right
In the final act of planting, an important measure takes place that bare-root and potted young roses cannot do without. Pile the plants with fresh soil so high that only 2 to 3 cm of the shoots are still visible. In this way, your roses are well protected from drying out, frost and blazing winter sun.
Tip
Roses do not like a location where their conspecifics have already held court. The rose expert calls this problem soil fatigue. So that the sophisticated flower beauties can develop their full splendor, ignore such locations. Alternatively, replace the soil at least 50 cm deep.
