Perhaps you have bought a garden in which there are already some European hollies or you would like to redesign your garden after many years, so a lot of care is required. Because the otherwise easy-care holly is a bit tricky.
How to successfully transplant a holly?
When transplanting holly, young shoots should be transplanted after two years by choosing slightly moist, lime-poor soil, adding some compost to the planting hole and watering the plant well. Older hollies are more sensitive and should not be transplanted.
What do I have to consider when transplanting?
Older hollies are reluctant to be moved, so you should transplant them if absolutely necessary. The new place should also be bright, i.e. in the sun or in light shade. Ideally, the soil is slightly moist and low in lime, but not waterlogged.
It's best to put on thick gardening gloves (€17.00 on Amazon) for this work, otherwise the spiny leaves are sure to leave painful marks on your hands. Thin cheap gloves won't do. If your holly is currently poisonous. Under no circumstances should they fall into the hands of children. Even a few berries are fatal to them.
Transplanting sinkers
If you have propagated your holly using lowering plants, then leave it on the old plant for about two years. Then it has enough time to form strong roots. The holly grows quite slowly. Only then do you look for a suitable location and plant the young plants.
Although the holly does not need any additional fertilizer if the soil is good, you are welcome to add some well-rotted compost to the planting hole when planting. Don't forget to water the Ilex well so that it will soon recover from the stress of moving.
If its leaves turn brown or yellow, then the Ilex is probably suffering from a lack of water. However, this usually happens in winter because the plant also wants to be watered during this time. Diseases or pests are very rare in holly.
