Can you stick pond liner under water?
To stick pond liner under water, a special adhesive should be used that is suitable for use under water and is compatible with fish and plants. PVC and PE films require different adhesives. For PE films, draining for repair is recommended.
Glue for pond liners
First of all, you always have to distinguish which type of liner is installed in your pond. For PVC films and PE films you must use different adhesives than for EPDM films.
Even if you want to repair damage underwater, you must use special glue. You can only use ordinary PVC adhesives on dry films. With EPDM films, you should always drain them before repairing them. This allows you to seal more thoroughly.
Requirements for glue
If you want to use an adhesive (23.00€ on Amazon) in a fish or swimming pond underwater, you should make sure of a few things beforehand:
- that the adhesive is suitable for use under water
- that the glue is compatible with fish
- that the glue is plant-friendly
If these requirements are met, you can also assume that the adhesive is suitable for use in swimming ponds and is also safe for people.
Be sure to make sure beforehand whether the film installed in your pond is actually PVC film and not PE film. PE film is usually much less easy to stick and the adhesive strength of most adhesives is significantly weaker with these films.
You should avoid underwater repairs to the damaged area with PE film. In this case, you should consider draining the pond for repairs.
Renew film
If you notice more and more damage over time, or the film has become leaky overall, you should consider replacing the film. In the long run, this will save you from costly repairs. When replacing, consider what type of film you want to use as the new film.
Tip
If you drain the pond before repairing the damaged area, you should only fill it again 1 - 2 days after the repair. Most people need glue until they create a really permanently tight connection at the glue point.
