A very special trend is popular at the moment: turning old into new or the shabby chic look. Used objects become individual unique pieces with simple decoration. Old flower pots can also be refreshed this way.

How can I design a flower pot myself in the shabby chic style?

To make a shabby chic style flower pot yourself, remove dirt, prime the pot with acrylic or chalk paint, sand the surface, apply glue and bird sand. Once dry, dab on a second color, label the pot and seal with matt spray paint.

The new “old” flower pot

All you need to transform or “upcycle” an old flower pot is a little time, a good idea, common household tools and of course a flower pot in need of renovation.

The preparation

Gather your old flower pots and prepare them for redesign.

  1. Take the old pot and use a wire brush to remove dirt and limescale.
  2. Scrub thoroughly again under running water. It might be worth putting it in the dishwasher.
  3. Let the pot dry out thoroughly.

The redesign step by step

For the next steps you will need

  • Acrylic or chalk paint
  • a small sponge
  • Glue
  • a wide and a narrow brush
  • fine sandpaper
  • a bag of bird sand
  • First, prime the pot with a color of your choice. Use the sponge to do this. Acrylic paint is relatively durable, chalk paint washes off over time and is quickly discolored by microorganisms (but also creates a shabby look)
  • Let the paint dry thoroughly.
  • Then sand the pot again with the fine sandpaper.
  • Now apply the glue with the wide brush. The glue can be applied irregularly so that it doesn't have the same adhesion everywhere (then it looks pretty worn).
  • Now sprinkle bird sand onto the wet glue. Vary the amount so that the pot is not completely covered with sand.
  • Let the pot dry for a day.
  • Now you can dab on a second matching color with the sponge. Do not apply the paint all over the area, deliberately leave gaps.
  • Inscriptions with a thin brush can also be decorative.
  • The pot will last longer if you apply a matt spray paint at the end. Sand and paint are not immediately washed off the pot by rain.
  • Now all you need to do is plant your “shabby look” pot with a beautiful flower.
