The benefits of paper pots
Paper flower pots are an inexpensive alternative to plastic or peat pots that are used to separate young plants. Sow your vegetable seeds as usual in planting trays and then transplant the young plants into paper pots. These are breathable, the delicate roots of the young plants receive a lot of oxygen and can therefore develop well. Once they have grown vigorously through the paper, they can be planted outdoors using the paper pot. The paper pot rots over time.
Are paper pots harmless?
If you want to cultivate your vegetable plants in homemade paper pots, you should only use normal newspaper, such as the newspaper. This paper consists only of pulp and printer's ink, although this ink has long since ceased to be toxic. The main component of the paint is carbon, which does not harm the soil. The pages of glossy magazines are unsuitable. This contains substances that do not belong in garden soil or a vegetable plant.
Instructions for a simple paper pot
First you need a newspaper and a round shape, such as a bottle or a can.
- Fold the paper to A3 format.
- Fold a third of the longer side again.
- Place the bottle or can on the thicker part of the newspaper.
- Twist the can like a gift.
- Now work on the bottom of the resulting flower pot.
- Fold the excess newspaper inwards. A tip is created that can be pushed into the fold.
- Press the soil firmly.
- Carefully pull the can or bottle out of the pot.
- The edge can be folded for reinforcement. To do this, fold the upper edge inwards by about 1 cm.
- The edge reinforcement can also be done using sturdy adhesive tape.
- The flower pot can now be filled with soil and placed on a saucer.
