When you grow different plants together in a bed or container, it is called mixed culture. Many vegetables and herbs are very suitable for this and can complement each other. We explain whether basil and lettuce can be planted together.
Are basil and lettuce suitable for a mixed culture?
Basil and lettuce are well suited for a mixed culturenot particularly. The popular culinary herb gets along much better with other neighbors such as cucumbers or tomatoes and there are also planting partners that are better suited for lettuce.
Why can't basil and lettuce be planted together?
Basil and lettuce cannot be planted well together because theyhave different requirements for location and soil.
Basil, which is not easy to care for, loves it warm and sunny without strong midday heat, but doesn't like drafts or too much wind. As a heavy feeder, basil requires nutrient-rich soil with sufficient nitrogen. Lettuce, on the other hand, requires little care and is extremely robust - a little more wind doesn't hurt, in fact it's good. Ideally, the earth is poor in nitrogen.
Tip
This is how lettuce feels at home in a mixed culture
Vegetables such as bush beans, peas, cabbage, carrots, leeks or radishes are best planted with salad in the garden bed or alternatively in the raised bed. Onions also work well in a mixed culture, as do strawberries. Celery is not an option as a planting partner. From the world of herbs, dill goes very well with salad.
