Gerberas are particularly popular as cut flowers. But they also decorate every flower window as a potted plant. You can also plant some varieties in the garden in summer. What do you have to consider if you want to cut gerberas for the vase or for care?
When and how should you cut gerberas?
Gerberas should be selected for cutting for the vase when they are slightly open. Using sharp, clean scissors, cut the stem about three centimeters above the ground. Remove spent flowers and dried leaves regularly to promote flowering.

If you have planted gerberas in the garden, you may want to occasionally cut one or more flowers for bouquets. You can also use flowers from houseplants as cut flowers.

Use the right tool for cutting
Use scissors instead of a knife to cut. This means that the rest of the stem does not fray and is not so quickly attacked by putrefactive bacteria. Only use sharp scissors that you have cleaned well beforehand. Then you do not transfer germs and bacteria that can damage the plant.
Cutting gerberas before winter rest
If you want to overwinter garden gerberas indoors, you should cut off all dried leaves and especially the bloomed inflorescences after digging them up.
You must not cut the plant back completely. Leave all he althy plant parts.
Always cut out faded houseplants immediately
So that the houseplant or garden gerbera produces many flowers, you should always grab scissors immediately when a flower has faded or leaves have dried up.
Just like with the garden gerbera, cut the stems just above the ground. The rest of the stem moves in on its own and after a short time it no longer bothers you.

If you need the stems for a beautiful bouquet, cut the bottom ends diagonally. Then the cut flowers can draw water better and last longer.
Tips & Tricks
Gerberas in the vase should be cut every two to three days. Otherwise, the water-carrying veins become condensed and begin to rot. The flower then dries out very quickly because it no longer receives enough moisture.
