The kohlrabi seeds have sprouted well and are close together. Before the small kohlrabi plants compete for space in the bed and hinder their growth, they must be pricked out. Large, strong plants move to a new location, weaker plants are sorted out.

When and how should you prick kohlrabi?

Kohlrabi plants should be pricked out as soon as they have formed two leaves next to the cotyledons. During this process, the plants are carefully removed from the soil, their roots are shortened slightly and reinserted at a sufficient distance from each other.

Why prick?

Kohlrabi is sown thinly in rows in the garden bed or in cultivation containers for the windowsill. If all the seeds sprout, the bed or container becomes cramped. The plants hinder each other's growth and therefore have to be separated.

The right time

Cotyledons + 2: you should prick out your young kohlrabi plants according to this rule. About a week after germination, two leaves have formed in addition to the small cotyledons. Then it's time to prick.

How it works

  • Carefully remove the plants individually from the soil
  • use a pricking stick or hold the plant between your thumb and forefinger
  • Shorten roots easily
  • drill a hole in the soil with your finger or a stick and insert the plant with the roots facing downreplace it at the bottom

  • the leaves must not rest on the ground
  • Press down the soil, water lightly, done

Where to put the young plants

Pricked out plants are replanted in a new location. You should maintain a distance of at least 15 cm in the garden bed. You can now plant the kohlrabi plants that you prefer on the windowsill individually in prepared small pots or yogurt cups. Here they can continue to grow in nutrient-rich substrate until they find their place outdoors.

Most of the time, more kohlrabi plants will develop than you need. Then you sort out the weaker ones and the strong plants are preserved.

Tips & Tricks

Put transplanted plants back into the ground immediately! If they are left in the sun, they will quickly dry out and wither.
