Home gardeners have an easy time growing garlic. It starts with sowing the seeds. Since they like to take their time until they germinate, impatient garlic growers prefer to stick their toes in. This is how it works smoothly.
How to sow garlic from seeds?
To sow garlic from seeds, choose a sunny, warm place with loose, nutrient-rich soil. Sow in February or October by planting the bulbs 1-2 cm deep and 10-15 cm apart and then watering.
Sowing garlic seeds. Which seeds?
It's not that easy to get garlic seeds. They are only available in specialist retailers for a few weeks each autumn. This is because they don't last long, as they have little in common with seeds in the traditional sense.
When we talk about garlic seeds, we actually mean small bulbs. Following the white or pink flowers, they develop into cylindrical shells. Garlic seeds are purple and have a very firm consistency.
If your friends are hobby gardeners who grow their own garlic, you have the best prospects of fresh seeds. The onions are cut out of the top hat with a sharp knife.
Sowing dates are in spring and autumn
Choose a sunny spot for planting garlic that is both warm and, if possible, sheltered. The soil condition is ideally loose, humus-rich, nutrient-rich and not too dry. Garlic is sown in February or October.

The very firmly structured garlic seeds take up to 1 year longer to mature. If that doesn't work quickly enough for you, add fresh garlic cloves instead. These are larger than seeds and require a planting depth of 5-7 cm.

Commercial vegetable soil serves as a suitable substrate in the pot or flower box. In such a confined space there is a risk of waterlogging. Therefore, create a drainage system at the bottom made of pebbles, grit, perlite or crushed pottery shards.
If you have a weed fleece (€13.00 on Amazon) at hand, spread it over the drainage so that it doesn't become clogged with the substrate. Otherwise there are no differences to sowing garlic in the bed.
