Do you have a delicious autumn raspberry variety in your garden and would like to grow more bushes from it? Propagate existing raspberry plants. Even beginners can do this easily. No previous knowledge is required.
How to propagate autumn raspberries?
Autumn raspberries can be propagated by root runners, root cuttings, suckers or seeds. Root suckers and root cuttings are easy methods for rapid growth, suckers provide year-round propagation opportunities, and seeds are more suitable for experienced gardeners.
The different methods of propagation
Autumn raspberries can be propagated in several ways, namely by:
- Root runners
- Root cuttings
- Lowers
- Seeds
Propagation by root suckers
Propagation through root runners is carried out by the plant itself, especially if it is an older raspberry variety. It produces numerous offshoots that spread throughout the garden.
As soon as the first raspberry leaves appear above the ground, you can dig up the cuttings and replant them in the desired location. The best time for this work is autumn.
Propagation by root cuttings
Modern breeding produces fewer runners. Propagation through root cuttings is ideal here. To do this, cut off one or more sections of approximately ten centimeters long with at least one eye from the raspberry rootstock in late autumn.
Place the pieces in a growing bed with humus soil mixed with a little sand. Cover the root pieces with a layer of mulch.
In spring, remove the mulch. The sections will soon develop into new plants that you can transplant to the desired location.
Propagation by reducers
Bend a cane of a raspberry plant down to the ground. Anchor the shoot with hooks (€12.00 on Amazon) or pegs and sprinkle soil over it in several places.
Small roots develop in the areas covered with soil. As soon as the first leaves appear, cut off the sections and plant them in the garden.
You can win sinkers all year round.
Propagation by seeds
You get seeds by artificially fertilizing the flower of an autumn raspberry. When the fruit has developed, the seeds are carefully removed.
However, propagating raspberries through seeds is not recommended. It takes a very long time for bushes to form and it is not certain that the desired autumn raspberry variety will develop.
Tips & Tricks
Autumn raspberries are particularly suitable for propagation through root cuttings. The bushes will bear the first fruit the next year. With summer raspberries, it takes at least a year before you can harvest for the first time.
