Do you love raspberries and would like to have several bushes in your garden? Simply grow new raspberry bushes from your old plants yourself. You don't need much previous knowledge for this. This is how it works when growing your own raspberries.
How can you grow your own raspberries?
Raspberries can be propagated by root cuttings, runners or planters. The best time to propagate is October or November. Avoid growing raspberries from seeds as it is laborious and may not produce the desired variety.
How to propagate raspberries
You can multiply raspberries by:
- Root cuttings
- foothills
- Lowers
Growing raspberries from seeds is not recommended. This is very time-consuming and it is not certain that the desired variety will come out.
When is the best time to grow your own raspberries?
October and November are the best months to propagate raspberries.
The plants have enough time to grow over the winter. Autumn raspberries will bear their first fruit next year.
You can also grow your own raspberries in early spring. However, they take longer to grow. You can only harvest from the second year.
Pulling raspberries from runners
Most raspberry varieties form numerous runners. After a while you will find new plants everywhere near your raspberries if you have not provided a root barrier.
Dig out the soil generously around the foothills. Carefully lift the plant, making sure there are enough roots on it.
Growing raspberries from root cuttings
Prick off larger pieces of the root of the raspberry plant with a spade. There must be at least three to five eyes in a row.
Lower raspberries
Place a rod on the ground and secure it with hooks. Cover the shoot with soil in several places.
By next spring, small plants with roots should have formed.
Planting runners and root cuttings
Prepare the new location by loosening the soil well and improving it with compost or manure.
Do not plant the cuttings or runners too deeply into the soil. Tread the soil carefully. In winter, spread a blanket of mulch (€14.00 on Amazon) over the new plants.
Tips & Tricks
Modern raspberry varieties form fewer runners. Such plants should therefore only be propagated via root cuttings. This gives you the certainty that you are actually growing the variety you want.
