The cherry trees are generally considered to be easy to care for and undemanding, also in terms of location. However, you can only achieve a good harvest if you offer the cherry trees optimal conditions.
How should the location for cherry trees be chosen?
The ideal location for cherry trees is a sunny, airy place with well-drained, nutrient-rich soil, without stagnant moisture. Sweet cherries prefer protected, warm locations and deep soil, while sour cherries are less demanding and also thrive on dry, sandy soil.
Sweet cherry location
The sweet cherry prefers sheltered, sunny altitudes. The early flowering completely excludes late frost conditions for cultivation. Very humid locations are also not suitable for growing sweet cherries. As a deep rooter, the sweet cherry tree requires warm, permeable, nutrient-rich and deep soil.
If the nutrient and moisture content of the soil is sufficient, it also thrives on rocky slopes. On cold and wet soil, gum flow and increased susceptibility to frost occur very easily, as well as on heavy, clayey soils. Poor sandy soils are also unsuitable.
Location for sour cherries
The sour cherry tree's demands on the location are lower than those of the sweet cherry. It requires a free, airy and sunny location. The need for warmth is not high. The sour cherry still thrives on dry, sandy soil. Of all types of fruit, the sour cherry is the most frost hardy. Due to the relatively late flowering period, the sensitive blossom is better protected from late frosts than that of the sweet cherry.
