The peach tree, which originally comes from China, has been cultivated in Germany for a very long time. Old cultivated varieties such as the Rote Eichstädter (also known as “Kernechter vom Vorgebirge”) testify to this. However, the heat-loving peaches are quite demanding when it comes to their location.
Which location is best for a peach tree?
The ideal location for a peach tree is a sunny, wind-protected spot with a loose and nutrient-rich substrate. If conditions are not optimal, more robust, frost-resistant and white-fleshed varieties such as “Flamingo” are recommended.
Peaches love the sun
Optimal is a place that is as sunny and sheltered from the wind as possible with a loose and nutrient-rich substrate. A southern orientation without shade, but with a boundary that protects against wind and drafts (e.g. house wall) might be the right choice. Peaches grow best where wine also grows well. Depending on the variety, cultivation is also possible in harsher regions.
White-fleshed varieties are less sensitive
If you don't live in a wine-growing region, we recommend growing more robust varieties. Most white-fleshed peaches are less sensitive to less optimal locations and also thrive in northern regions. You should also choose a frost-resistant peach whose flowers do not freeze immediately when night frosts begin. In such a case, the “Flamingo” variety is a good choice.
