Many palm tree species come from sunny, hot regions of the world. Accordingly, you also want to be pampered by the sun in your room or outdoors. If placed too dark, the foliage remains weak, shows spots and the plant stunts.
How much sun does a palm tree need?
A sunny location is ideal for palm trees, such as a south-facing window or south-facing balcony. In the garden they should be planted on a protective, south-facing house wall. Palms that are sensitive to frost require a cool, bright place to overwinter. Get used to the sun slowly in spring to avoid sunburn.
The light requirement
How much sun a palm tree can tolerate is printed on the plant label. These are usually three suns. These mean that your new purchase needs a location in full sun. In this case, a south-facing window or a south-facing balcony is ideal.

The winter rest
In the cold season the palm trees hibernate. Plants that are outdoors during the summer and that are not completely frost-resistant must be overwintered indoors. The following applies:
- The cooler the room, the less light the plant needs.
- If the palm tree has to overwinter in the warm living room for reasons of space, the location should be as bright as possible.
Get used to the sun after hibernation
So that the plant does not get sunburned, it must be carefully acclimated to the changed conditions outdoors in spring. First place the palm tree in a shady, sunny spot. In the second week, the leaves can be exposed to sunlight in the morning and afternoon. Only then is the plant moved to its final, full-sun summer location.
Tip
Palm trees need a lot of air humidity and should therefore be moistened regularly with a sprayer. However, be careful not to do this when the sun is shining. The water drops on the leaves act like magnifying glasses and lead to very unsightly leaf injuries.
