What are the properties of sea buckthorn Leikora?

The sea buckthorn Leikora is a female sea buckthorn variety with strong growth, large, closely spaced fruits and fewer root runners. The plant should be grown in the company of a male pollinator such as Pollmix to achieve high crop yields.

This variety has proven itself

The Leikora variety saw the light of day in the GDR era. It was selected in the town of Leitzkau and recognized in the GDR in 1979. From this point on it went on sale.

It has proven itself to this day and is considered the most popular female sea buckthorn variety. Their fruits in particular contribute to this. In contrast to the original wild species and other cultivated varieties, the fruits of this specimen are larger and occupy the shoots tightly packed together.

The growth behavior of Leikora

The Leikora sea buckthorn is difficult to distinguish from other varieties due to its growth pattern. This variety has a strong and compact growth. It reaches a width of between 150 and 250 cm. In height it is between 300 and 450 cm. In rarer cases it breaks the 6 meter mark.

Overall, the appearance of the sea buckthorn Leikora appears shrub-like: well-branched, upright and loose. The heavily prickly main shoots are upright, while the side shoots, which are also armed, overhang a little, especially when they have fruit on them.

Less root runners than others

This variety has significantly fewer root runners. In contrast to other sea buckthorn varieties, Leikora makes it easier for you to manage things and the risk of cracked pavement slabs is significantly lower.

Variety, large and delicious – the fruits of Leikora

If there is a male specimen of its species next to the sea buckthorn Leikora, the flowers, which are present from March to April, can be reliably pollinated. The well-known Pollmix variety, for example, is suitable as a pollinator.

The fruits are characterized by the following characteristics:

  • Ripe from mid-September to early October
  • long lasting color
  • 6 to 8 mm long and therefore comparatively large
  • regular and high harvest yields

Tips & Tricks

Although this variety produces few runners, you should be careful. Do not plant them near path slabs, paving stones or even directly in front of the terrace - this could be destructive.
