Despite the lower temperatures in Germany, peanut cultivation is relatively easy here too. With the right seeds, you can harvest your own fruit for roasting or cooking in September. The prerequisite for a rich harvest is a constant soil temperature of 18 degrees.
How can you grow peanuts in Germany?
Peanut cultivation in Germany is successful with the right seeds and a constant soil temperature of 18 degrees. Grow the plants indoors from March and plant them outdoors as soon as the ground is warm enough. Harvest the fruits in September when the herb has turned yellow.
Peanuts need a lot of heat
In order for peanuts to germinate and later develop new fruits in the garden, they need a constant soil temperature that must not fall below 18 degrees.
It takes between three and four months for the peanuts to ripen.
If you don't have a greenhouse, prefer plants indoors.
How to sow peanuts
- Fill pot with garden soil
- Put out seeds
- Cover with soil
- Place in a warm location
As seeds, you can theoretically use any peanut kernel that has not been roasted or treated in any other way.
However, it is better to get seeds (€4.00 on Amazon) from specialist retailers. There you can also get robust varieties that cope better with cooler temperatures.
Grow peanut plants indoors from March. Otherwise it could be that the fruits do not ripen in time before the onset of frost.
Growing peanuts outdoors
As soon as the soil in the garden has warmed up to at least 18 degrees and no more frost is expected, you can plant the peanuts outdoors.
Good, nutritious garden soil is sufficient. The location must not be too humid. Loosen the soil around the plant a little so that the inflorescences can anchor themselves well in the soil. The fruits then form there.
Water the plants sparingly during the growing season. Every two to four weeks, add some vegetable fertilizer to strengthen the peanut plants.
Harvest from September
The peanuts are ripe when the cabbage has turned yellow. Pull the entire plant out of the ground.
Before roasting the peanuts or using them for cooking, let them dry on the plant for some time.
Tips & Tricks
You can also grow peanuts without first removing the hard shell. However, the germination process then takes longer. However, you must not remove the brown skin around the kernels because the peanut may then not sprout.
