How do I properly care for my quince tree?
Caring for a quince tree includes moderate watering, transplanting if necessary, proper pruning and possibly fertilization. Garden fleece and a sheltered location are recommended for protection in winter. Resistant varieties can prevent diseases.
Watering in moderation
A lot of water is stored in the roots of the quince tree. It survives short dry periods without any problems. A slightly thicker layer of bark mulch (€14.00 on Amazon) around the tree trunk is suitable for support. In this way, the moisture from the soil does not evaporate as quickly.
If summer days mean a longer dry season, it is recommended to water the quince tree a little. Basically, newly planted, young specimens should be watered regularly during the first few weeks. This is how you support the rooting process.
Change location: Is that possible?
You can transplant young quince trees. Make sure the entire root ball is dug up. This is about as big as the treetop. Older fruit trees should generally stay in their place.
Cut correctly: know how
The crown of the quince tree is thinned out as needed. In this way the sun can do its work. It reaches the fruit more intensively. In addition, the foliage dries regularly. In this way you prevent fungal diseases. In addition, cutting young shoots in spring supports increasing branching.
Note:
- immediately after winter, before flowering
- definitely not in February: very sensitive to frost
- recommended: frost-free days
- Remove old wood and young shoots
- be sure to cut off broken branches (risk of disease!)
What diseases can occur?
For several years now, the focus has been on innovative breeding that produces resilient varieties. Reportable fire blight is most dangerous for quince trees.
Is fertilization necessary?
Quinces are very frugal. It is recommended to add compost every two years. The best time for this is spring. This is distributed around the tree trunk. You can also add a little when planting.
What to do in winter?
With increasing age, quince trees become more and more robust in relation to Central European winters. It is recommended to protect young trees from dangerous frosts using garden fleece on the ground. Also make sure you have a protected location.

The choice of the ideal variety depends on the respective region. With the right quince you can quickly enjoy a rich harvest.
