What types of Reneclodes are there?

The Queen of the Renecludes

Probably the best-known and oldest variety among the Reneclodes is the 'Great Green'. It is considered the queen among its kind. It probably originated in Syria or Armenia. It has been widespread in France since the 15th century.

Their fruits grow up to 4.5 cm in diameter. They are green-yellow in color, spherical and ideal for both direct consumption from the plant and for cooking. The disadvantage of this variety: It requires a pollinator nearby. It counteracts this disadvantage with its resistance to the Sharka virus.

But not only the 'Big Green' is recommended for cultivation. In addition to it, there are numerous other varieties that are worth growing. Most varieties produce greenish-yellow to yellow fruits.

  • 'Diaphane': rare variety, ripe from the end of August, pink striped fruits with tender flesh

The varieties with red-purple to red-blue fruits are extremely visually appealing. These include the following:

  • ‘Graf Althanns’: from 1850, 4.5 cm large fruits from mid-August, easy to remove stones, resistant to flocks
  • 'Violet Reneklode': red-purple, juicy and sweet fruits, prefers mild locations, can be stored for a long time
  • 'Blue Reneklode': red-blue fruits with firm and sweet flesh, suitable for rough locations
