What types of avocado are there in Germany?

The best-known avocado varieties in Germany are Fuerte and Hass. Fuerte avocados have a green skin and taste creamy and mild, while Hass avocados have a dark skin and an intense nutty aroma. Other varieties include Nabal and mini avocado.

Avocado – one variety more delicious than the other

Unfortunately, only a few of these hundreds of avocado varieties are sold in this country. The different species differ in their shape, color and taste, but above all in weight and nutritional composition. The average avocado contains up to 25 percent oil and is therefore rich in unsaturated fatty acids. The Aztec fruit also contains many important vitamins and minerals - which are largely preserved because avocados should be eaten raw.

These are the main types of avocado:

  • Fuerte (green bowl, pear-shaped)
  • Hass / Black Sensation (dark skin when ripe, very aromatic)
  • Nabal (smooth shell, round shape, low fat content)
  • Mini avocado (small and cucumber-shaped, seedless)

Which variety tastes better?

Reputed avocado experts disagree on this question, as well as other questions of taste. In Germany, the Fuerte, which weighs up to 400 grams, is one of the most popular varieties, alongside the slightly lighter Hass. The Fuerte tastes creamy and mild, and its fruits also have the advantage of being comparatively insensitive to cold. Avocados of this type can easily be stored in the refrigerator at four to six degrees. In contrast, the “Hass” variety impresses with its dark skin and yellow flesh with an intense, nutty aroma. This avocado, created from a random mutation, is perfect for a delicious guacamole.

Special styles for special occasions

If you want to take care of your figure but don't want to miss out on the delicious and he althy food avocado, then you should choose the “Nadal” variety. The medium-sized avocado has the lowest fat content of all varieties and is usually available from January to March. A very special treat, on the other hand, is the mini avocado, which is currently only very rarely available in German supermarkets. This small, cucumber-shaped fruit contains no core (which is actually a seed) and can be squeezed out of its shell like a liverwurst. The flesh is very soft, creamy and mild.

Tips & Tricks
