The pomegranate is native to the warm climates of Asia and the Mediterranean. It tolerates short drops in temperature, but not permanent frost. In the temperate climate, the heat-loving exotic needs good winter protection or a frost-free winter quarters.
How can I overwinter a pomegranate tree cool and frost-free?
To overwinter a pomegranate tree coolly and frost-free, move the potted plant to a dark, cool place with temperatures between 2 °C and 10 °C after the leaves have fallen. Water only slightly to avoid drying out. From February onwards the plant can move to a warmer, brighter location.
The pomegranate tree is an easy-care plant that is grown in regions with tropical to subtropical climates. The fruits for the German fruit trade come from Turkey, Spain, Iran and Israel. Characteristic of these growing areas is the dry, sunny and low-precipitation climate with long, warm summers and mild winters.
Overwintering the potted plant
In many parts of Germany, the winters are too long and too harsh for the warmth-loving pomegranate tree. That's why it is usually kept in tubs and brought into the house to overwinter. As soon as the pomegranate tree has lost its leaves, it is moved to a dark, cool but frost-free place to overwinter, where temperatures should not fall below 2°C and do not exceed 10°C.
During this time, the pomegranate only receives enough water so that it does not dry out completely. From around February the plant can move to a warmer and brighter place. In May the pomegranate tree can take its place in the garden or on the terrace. A sheltered spot on a south wall of the house is best suited for this.
Overwintering the outdoor plant
Only in regions with a milder climate, where wine is also grown, can the pomegranate trees be planted directly outdoors in a full sun, protected location. But even there, and especially for the young trees, we recommend winter protection in the form of fleece (€23.00 on Amazon) or straw mats, which protect the leafless tree from permanent frost.
