If you want to enjoy flowering plants even in autumn, you can grow flowers and bulbs in addition to hardy perennials and grasses. What is important here is the right soil preparation, the right planting time and a good selection of autumn bloomers.
Which autumn blooming bulbs are there?
Autumn flowering bulbs for the garden include autumn crocus, autumn crocus, saffron crocus and autumn golden cup. These bulbous plants are hardy and will bloom in the fall if planted in July or August.
The right soil for onion plants
Onion plants like well-drained soil that is not waterlogged. It may be necessary to add a drainage layer of gravel or expanded clay to the onion plantings. It is best to dig up the soil before planting and add a dose of compost.
Bulb and tuber plants that bloom in autumn
A distinction must be made here between frost-sensitive and winter-hardy plants. Onions that are planted in the ground in spring usually cannot tolerate frost. You should therefore wait until the night frosts disappear before planting. Well-known representatives are: lilies, gladioli and dahlias.
Planting in July and August
Bulbs that are planted during this period usually bloom in the fall of the same year. These include:
- Autumn Crocus
- Autumn Crocus
- Saffron crocus
- Autumn gold cup (Sternbergia)
The Autumn Crocus
The autumn crocus is a very poisonous flower. The bulbs are planted in well-loosened soil at a distance of 10 to 20 cm. The soil should be nutrient-rich and permeable and contain some lime. Their bulbs are often buried in the lawn so that a beautiful purple carpet can develop in autumn.
Autumn crocus and saffron crocus
The autumn crocus loves a humus-rich, permeable, nutrient-rich soil in a sunny place. It is often planted in lawns and is ideal for growing wild on the edges of trees. One variety, the magnificent crocus, also thrives in partial shade to shade. All types of crocus are planted 6 to 10 cm deep in the soil and supplied with organic complete fertilizer (€27.00 on Amazon).
The expensive saffron threads are obtained from the saffron crocus. It thrives here at higher altitudes and loves sandy, sunny locations. It is completely hardy at a planting depth of 15 to 20 cm.
The autumn golden cup blooms well into winter
It loves sunny, dry locations with sandy, well-drained soil. The ideal locations can be found in the rock garden or in the dry bed. The autumn golden cup should be planted 10 to 15 cm deep. So it survives the winter well and only retreats into the ground for a resting phase in spring.
