The lime is believed to have originated in India and the Malay Peninsula. There, the evergreen tree bears flowers and fruit all year round in tropical temperatures. In Germany, the lime tree should overwinter coolly, but frost-free and as brightly as possible.
How do I overwinter a lime tree?
In order to overwinter a lime tree successfully, it should be kept cool (5-12 °C), frost-free and in a room that is as bright as possible. Water the plant regularly and avoid drafts. A greenhouse or winter garden are ideal locations.
Lime needs light even in winter
Like all other citrus trees, the lime also needs a lot of light. A location that is too dark will cause the tree to drop its leaves. So you should choose a place that is as bright as possible; a bright (south-facing) room is ideal. Temperatures between five and a maximum of 12 °C are perfect, meaning frost-free and cool. Water the lime regularly, with the principle that the cooler it is, the less water you need. The low temperatures are important because the incidence of light in winter is too short and too low to maintain a he althy growth phase.
Tips & Tricks
A greenhouse or a bright winter garden is best suited for overwintering the lime. Alternatively, accommodation in the bedroom or in a stairwell is also possible. However, make sure that the tree does not get any drafts.
