Which location is optimal for thyme?
The ideal location for thyme is a sunny, wind-protected place with a southern exposure and little shade. The soil should be lean, permeable and loose, ideally with a high proportion of sand or gravel and a neutral to alkaline pH value.
Thyme loves it warm and sunny
The Mediterranean climate is characterized by long dry periods, plenty of sun and warmth. Summers are hot, while winters are rather mild. Therefore, thyme needs a sunny and protected location where it can be in the sun all day, but is well protected from wind and other weather-related inconveniences. A spot that faces south and has little shade is best. In addition, it shouldn't be drafty - the plant, which needs warmth, doesn't necessarily tolerate wind.
The soil should be lean and permeable
In addition to the full sun location, the quality of the soil also determines the success or failure of planting Mediterranean herbs such as thyme. These plants are perfectly adapted to dry and nutrient-poor soils and are therefore quickly overwhelmed by excessively rich soil. A permeable, loose soil with a high proportion of sand or gravel is perfect. The optimal pH value is in the neutral to basic range. Heavy, clayey soils can be loosened by adding sand. Acidic soils, on the other hand, are not suitable at all - thyme, like other Mediterranean plants, will die quickly here.
